ISSN: 1854-2042

Editorial

This issue of Scripta Manent brings into focus a lively and dynamic field of vocabulary research in LSP (languages for specific purposes) teaching. It features two articles and a review. The authors of the articles use the lexical context to address two interesting questions: the role of translation in ESP and the question of anglicisms.

In her article "Expanding Vocabulary Through Translation – An Eclectic Approach" Koletnik  raises a question that has already been tackled in Scripta Manent (Laviosa and Cleverton 2006), namely: "How can translation inform ESP students and teachers in their specific situations?" Koletnik combines findings based on lexical and communicative theories to forward a translation-based approach which aims at highlighting collocational and formulaic features of language.

As a result of globalization and technological development the English language exerts an overwhelming influence on other languages. The nature of this influence has been extensively dealt with from a broader socio-cultural perspective as well as from the linguistic perspective. In "Anglizismen im berufsbezogenen DaF-Unterricht – Die Untersuchung von Anglizismen im Bereich der Luftfahrt" Orthaber takes this latter perspective to analyse the use of anglicisms in German language for specific purposes. She explores a corpus of texts coming from the field of aviation and draws on her findings in the preparation of suitable LSP materials for the students of logistics.

Skela proposes a review of the first English coursebook for theologians in Slovenia: "English for Theologians" by Urška Sešek and Simona Duška Zabukovec. The text will attract interested readers by a meticulous analysis of the textbook’s organisational principles and of its theoretical grounding.
