Curricula, levels of mastery of a foreign language for specific purposes and textbooks in higher professional schools

Abstract

The paper deals with the teaching of foreign languages for specific purposes (LSP) in Slovenian (mostly private) higher professional schools, which follow common national curricula. An analysis of 22 curricula for a foreign language for specific purposes, all renewed in the 2007-08 academic year, was undertaken, along with an analysis of questionnaires among 40 teachers of foreign LSP in autumn 2008. The research has three main purposes: to highlight the new curricula and their implementation; to connect them with entry and exit levels of achievement of a foreign language; and to examine the role of textbooks and other teaching materials in higher professional schools. The paper attempts to sketch out the actual status of foreign language for specific purposes in Slovenian higher professional schools.

Keywords: foreign languages for specific purposes, higher professional education, curricula, entry/exit levels of proficiency, teaching materials.
